I did well, sensei?

A true daughter of the demon. Better, in fact, than I was at your age.

Kitty wakes up shaking and covered in sweat.

And intangible, two inches above the bed.

She curls up tighter into a ball and stays there for a few moments, slowing her breath, before silently dropping to her feet on the floor.

It's hard to stay solid right now.

You should be in bed. She rammed you through the heart with that sword.

I can rest later. I have to act now, or it might be too late.

It's already too late, Logan-san. She'll never be free from Ogun.

I have to try.

Kitty always did eavesdrop.

The shower's warm, and she forces the water on her, not through her.

It's relaxing.

It's not distracting.

he offers her immortality, and her mind screams "Father"

(You are the Daughter of the Demon, and it is an honour to be sent to my death by you)

and she wants to say yes

he's slumped, pained, from fighting the demon, and her mind screams "Father"

and she says no

and she fights

The phone rings, and she answers it after a moment. "Yes?"

"Pryde-san. The sword--or you lead us."

"I know."

"The dragons are growing impatient."

And now her voice is cold. "Harm them and I'll show you what Sensei taught me. You may have been his student too, but I was his protege."

There's a pause, and the voice that replies is angry. "You have one more day."

A click, as the line disconnects.

She sets the phone down, and sits on the bed, head in her hands.

"Lead a ninja clan, or get the sword from the Silver Samurai. Great."

Course, Ogun did teach her well.

Especially when it came to being sneaky.

"Where is she?"

Kitty looks back at the fire.

"...She burned out while I faded away."

That's the way of things.

They were both Ogun's student.

But Kitty was his protege.

And she's not about to lose one of her lives now.

You don't get details.

There isn't context to them unless you live through it, anyway.

The ninja rescues the dragons. It's like a fairy tale ending in reverse.

It's enough.

Kitty slumps in her seat of the airplane, looking out the window at the two dragons flying next to her.

"What am I going to do with two?!"

And then she grins.

"Adam's gonna kill me."
She's really tired.

And bruised.

Let's not forget the bruised thing.

(Edmund won't notice, thanks to the image inducer she's forgetten she's wearing. It covers things like that nicely.)

But she smiles as she enters and sees him sleeping, and smiles as she climbs into the bed and wraps her arms around him, chin settling on his shoulder.

"Merry Christmas," she whispers, and she thinks in his sleep he murmurs, "Happy Hannukah," which makes her smile.

In the morning, he'll be surprised when he wakes up.

For now, they both just sleep.
